The INTERACTIVE GOALS project’s Teacher’s Handbook aims to answer that question by making the link between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and one of the most popular modern consumer items among adolescents and teenagers, smartphones. It attempts to get students to collaborate in groups to connect each goal to the others, with the smartphone serving as a concept to be investigated. To be more specific, it seeks to elicit student reflection on questions such as the utility of smartphones and mobile communications, how much it costs us in terms of resources and human labour, how much and what kind of trash is produced, and why. Moreover, it aims to create learning and teaching environments in which students, as critical thinkers of modern communication technology, can become agents of transition toward more sustainable development, not only in environmental or economic terms but also in social and cultural terms.
